Yorkshire’s head coach has spoken out to address speculation and clarify the circumstances surrounding Indian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad’s withdrawal from the ongoing County Championship, just days before his highly anticipated debut against Surrey in Scarborough.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s withdrawal rocks Yorkshire
In a move that caught the English domestic cricket community by surprise, Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Maharashtra captain, abruptly pulled out of his maiden county stint with Yorkshire citing personal reasons. The decision was communicated to Yorkshire mere days before their crucial County Championship clash against reigning champions Surrey, leaving the club scrambling to find a replacement.
Yorkshire had signed Gaikwad for a five-match spell, starting July 22, and his experience was expected to strengthen their faltering campaign. Gaikwad, 28, had previously expressed excitement about joining the esteemed English county, stating, “It has always been a goal of mine to experience cricket in this country and there is no bigger Club in England than Yorkshire.”
Anthony McGrath clarifies Gaikwad’s stance
Addressing mounting speculation, Yorkshire’s head coach Anthony McGrath moved to clear the air on Friday.
“Unfortunately Gaikwad’s not coming now for personal reasons. We’re not going to have him for Scarborough or for the rest of the season. So that’s disappointing. I can’t tell you anything about the reasons why, but we hope that everything’s ok. We’ve literally just found out,” said McGrath during a press briefing.
McGrath emphasized the strictly personal nature of Gaikwad’s withdrawal, refusing to elaborate on the specifics. He added that the timing has put Yorkshire in a difficult position as they race against the clock to identify a suitable replacement overseas player.
“We’re working behind the scenes on what we can do. But it’s only two or three days away, so I’m not sure what we can do at the moment. Time pressure is the issue. I can’t give you anything more than that at the moment,” McGrath stated.
Yorkshire, currently languishing eighth in the County Championship standings, now face a challenging period ahead of a pivotal fixture. The last-minute change has disrupted their plans, but McGrath confirmed the county is “working to try and get a possible replacement” even as time runs short.

Gaikwad’s recent injury woes
Gaikwad, who enjoyed a memorable run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but was cut short by an elbow fracture earlier in 2025, was out of competitive cricket for several months. He was subsequently named in the India A squad for the England tour but remained on the bench for both unofficial Tests.
His return to full fitness and the county deal were considered a key opportunity for Gaikwad to bolster his red-ball credentials, especially with a potential Test spot in mind. He has scored 2,632 runs in 38 First-Class matches at an average of 41.77, including seven centuries. However, the persistent injury and now this withdrawal have limited his recent game time.
