South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder has opened up about a heartfelt conversation with West Indies legend Brian Lara following his record-breaking knock of 367 not out in the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. Mulder’s innings, which came at a blistering pace, helped South Africa post a mammoth total before he surprised many by declaring the innings, just 38 runs short of Lara’s iconic unbeaten 400 — the highest individual score in Test history.
Wiaan Mulder reflects on chat with Brian Lara after landmark 367 innings
In a recent conversation with Supersport, Mulder shared that he had spoken to Lara following his unbeaten 367 in the second Test against Zimbabwe. He said Lara acknowledged the significance of the innings and told him that he was on the path to creating his own legacy. The legendary West Indies batter felt that Mulder should have pursued the record, adding that milestones exist to be broken. Lara also expressed his hope that if Mulder ever found himself in a similar position again, he would push forward and aim to surpass the benchmark Lara himself once set.
“I’ve chatted a little bit to Brian Lara. He said to me I’m creating my own legacy and I should have gone for it. He said records are there to be broken and he wishes if I’m ever in that position again I go and score more than what he had,” Mulder stated.

Mulder also shares on his decision to declare the innings
Mulder further added that he had no regrets about his decision to declare. He described the innings as incredibly special — something beyond what he had ever imagined. Reflecting on Lara’s perspective, he acknowledged it as interesting, but stood by his choice, emphasizing that respecting the game remained the most important principle for him.
“It’s super special and not something I would have dreamt of. That was an interesting point of view from his side, but I still believe I did the right thing and respecting the game is the most important part for me,” Mulder further added.
