The New Orleans Saints (2-4) are on a four-game losing streak as they prepare to face the Denver Broncos (3-3) at the Caesars Superdome on Thursday.
While a lot of attention is on Denver coach Sean Payton’s return to New Orleans, where he coached the Saints from 2006-21 and led them to a Super Bowl win, the Saints are focused on breaking their losing streak. Here’s how they can turn things around:
1. Strong Running Game
Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler will start for the second time. In his debut, he completed 22 of 40 passes for 243 yards, a touchdown, two interceptions, and was sacked five times. He also rushed for 27 yards. To ease the pressure on Rattler, the Saints need a better running game than the 81 yards they managed last week against Tampa Bay. Taysom Hill’s possible return and the addition of Kendre Miller could help Alvin Kamara, who struggled with just 40 yards on 13 carries.
2. Utilize Tight Ends
With wide receivers Chris Olave (concussion) and Rashid Shaheed (knee) out, the Saints are missing their two top offensive weapons. Rookies Bub Means and Mason Tipton will have to step up, but tight ends Juwan Johnson and Foster Moreau will likely be key in the passing game. Last week, they combined for 102 yards on five catches. Their ability to support Rattler, along with help from Kamara and Hill, will be crucial.
3. Stopping Denver’s Rookie QB
Denver’s rookie quarterback Bo Nix has played well, completing 61% of his passes for 1,082 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions. He’s been careful with the ball, throwing only one interception in the last four games. The Saints’ defense, which had three interceptions last week and 10 this season, needs to increase pressure on Nix. Sacks are also essential, as mobile quarterbacks have been a problem for the Saints. Nix has been sacked only nine times and has rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns. The Saints’ defense needs to find a way to confuse him and get him on the ground.
4. Minimize Mistakes
To support Rattler, the Saints need to avoid penalties, especially pre-snap offensive mistakes and costly defensive fouls. It’s already deep into the season, so it’s time for the team to clean up these issues and play smarter football.
5. Rally the Crowd
The return of Sean Payton is a huge emotional moment for the fans, and they want to see the Saints beat their former coach. If the Saints can score early and keep the crowd involved, it will provide an extra energy boost. This game is not just important to end a losing streak but also for the fans who have a deep connection to Payton and what he did for the team after Hurricane Katrina.
By focusing on these areas, the Saints have a good chance of turning their season around and securing a much-needed win.
