Punjab Kings order BCCI to create 16-week IPL season to compete with NFL, NBA, EPL

Punjab Kings (PBKS) co-owner Mohit Burman believes that the Indian Premier League (IPL) must be extended to at least 12 to 16 weeks if it wants to compete with the world’s biggest sports leagues like the NFL, NBA, and English Premier League in terms of brand value.

Currently, the IPL runs for around eight weeks, and Burman feels this window is much shorter than its international counterparts like America’s National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball Association (NBA) League.

The PBKS co-owner highlighted that the English Premier League runs for about 10 months, the NBA runs for 7 months, and the NFL runs for about 4.5 months, and their longer window allows them more games, greater fan engagement, and stronger sponsor value.

Burman feels that expanding the IPL window will also allow it to reach the same level of recognition, influence, and value. The Punjab Kings co-owner noted that the IPL is already a major player in terms of per-match value. At USD 16.8 million per match, IPL ranks second only to the NFL, which sits at the top with USD 36.8 million.

However, when it comes to overall brand value, the IPL still trails behind. According to investment bank Houlihan Lokey, the IPL’s total valuation is around USD 16 billion, which is not much, as the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys alone are worth USD 9 billion.

Other teams like the New York Yankees (USD 7.1 billion), New York Knicks (USD 7 billion), and top football clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United (USD 6 billion each) have much bigger brand value.

IPL has the scale, now it’s about consistency and depth: Mohit Burman

Mohit Burman was quoted as saying by PTI, “We’re already second in the world when it comes to per-match value, just behind the NFL. But overall brand value? That’s a different game. I think we need a 12-16-week window to get there.”

The Punjab Kings co-owner added, “That gives us space to tell better stories, build rivalries, and create more value for everyone—fans, sponsors, and broadcasters. But it’s not just about length. It’s about what we do in that time—the kind of content we push out, how we engage fans year-round, and how we build the league beyond the season. IPL has the scale. Now it’s about consistency and depth.”

PBKS owner says IPL must grow beyond India without leaving home

Meanwhile, the Punjab Kings co-owner has noted that IPL is already the biggest cricket league in the world, but it must keep evolving to stay on top. Burman stressed that nothing should be taken for granted while highlighting the importance of player availability. He said that IPL needs a dedicated window where top international players can be available without any restrictions.

Burman signed off by saying, “The fan experience must keep evolving. It’s not just about cricket anymore—it’s sport, entertainment, and culture all rolled into one. We don’t need to take the IPL abroad—what we do need is to build global relevance. Content, players, and stories that connect with fans across the world.”

Notably, Punjab Kings had made it to the IPL finals after 11 years under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, but they lost the trophy to RCB earlier this week.
