Team India fast bowler Prasidh Krishna lauded Shubman Gill for his leadership despite the loss in the first Test of the five-match series against England in Leeds. Krishna, who played under Gill for Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2025, said that he was impressed with the way Gill managed the bowling unit in the first Test.
Team India began the Test series on a disappointing note, suffering a five-wicket defeat to England in the opening game. The hosts successfully chased down a target of 371 runs on the final day to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Shubman Gill’s first outing as India’s Test captain ended on an unsuccessful note.
Shubman Gill Did a Pretty Good Job as Captain – Prasidh Krishna
Prasidh Krishna said that Shubman Gill ensured bowlers got adequate rest and spotted opportunities during the game. Prasidh also commended Gill for creating a positive team environment despite the pressure of his first Test as captain.
“About Shubman — yeah, I think he did a pretty good job. All of us saw how he rotated the bowlers, made sure everyone got enough breaks, and brought bowlers in at the right times,” Prasidh Krishna said, as quoted by the Times of India.
“He spotted opportunities and used the right bowlers accordingly. All of that was great. And knowing him, he created a very good atmosphere around the team,” he added.
Shubman Gill Has Been Speaking to All of Us – Prasidh Krishna
Prasidh Krishna also stated that Shubman Gill is open to communication with the team. Prasidh said the lower-order batters are working on improving their skills during net sessions.
“He’s been speaking to all of us. We always go in with a plan, and the communication is happening there. As lower-order batsmen, we are definitely working on our game. If you look at our net sessions, we are putting in the work,” he continued.
“I think it’s also about putting your mind into it — making sure you trust yourself, trust the skill you have, and stay at the crease a little longer. The runs and numbers will then follow. And we are working towards that,” Prasidh concluded.
Plenty to Ponder for Shubman Gill and Co. Ahead of Crucial Second Test
Shubman Gill and his side will have to address multiple issues before the second match, which is scheduled to be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 2. The visiting team delivered with the bat in both innings but failed to post mammoth totals.
Their fielding also let them down, as several dropped catches across both innings played a major role in the outcome. Jasprit Bumrah took a five-wicket haul in the first innings, but the bowling attack struggled to take wickets consistently, raising concerns ahead of the next game.
Bumrah is expected to miss the second Test due to workload management, leaving a major void in the pace attack. India may have to consider changes to their playing XI as they look to bounce back. Gill began his captaincy tenure with a fine 147 in the first innings.
