Mitchell Starc destroys West Indies with career-best 6/9 as Caribbean side crash to 27 all-out

Mitchell Starc made his 100th Test match memorable with a magical performance in the third and final Test against the West Indies at Sabina Park, joining the elite 400-wicket club in the most dramatic way possible. Mitchell Starc’s stunning performance helped Australia beat the West Indies by 176 runs in the pink-ball Test to complete a 3-0 whitewash on July 15.

The Australian pacer tore through the West Indies top order on Day 3, taking five wickets in just 15 balls to script history. Mitchell Starc became the player with the fastest five-wicket haul in Test history. The pitcher started the destruction with the very first ball of the innings.

John Campbell edged a perfect outswinger to substitute wicketkeeper Josh Inglis. It was the fourth time in Starc’s career he had taken a wicket with the opening ball of a Test innings. Four balls later, West Indies debutant Kevlon Anderson left a ball that swung sharply in and hit him right in front of the stumps. Anderson reviewed it only to be proven wrong.

On the very next delivery, Mitchell Starc clean bowled Brandon King with another beauty that curved in and clipped the inside edge, leaving West Indies at 0/3. This was only the sixth time in Test history that a team had lost its first three wickets without a run on the board.

Well, Mikyle Louis managed to survive the hat-trick ball. Later, Mitchell Starc got Louis lbw with yet another deadly inswinger to reach his 400th Test wicket. The star pacer now becomes only the fourth Australian ever to reach the 400th mark after Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, and Nathan Lyon.

But he didn’t stop there. Two balls later, Mitchell Starc trapped Shai Hope in front of the stumps as well, completing his five-wicket haul in just 15 deliveries, smashing the previous record of 19 balls. He then bowled a clean bowl, and Jadyen Seales got out for a four-ball duck to hand the West Indies an unwanted record.

West Indies rewrite Test history for the worse

The West Indies team hit a new low in Test cricket as they were bowled out for just 27 runs while chasing 204 for victory in the third and final Test against Australia at Sabina Park. It was the second-lowest total in Test history, as well as the West Indies’ lowest score ever in the format.

The batting lineup had no answers to the Australian pace attack and collapsed in just 14.3 overs. Notably, the lowest score ever in Test cricket is 26 runs, made by New Zealand in 1955.

Additionally, this was only the 10th time in the 21st century that a team has been bowled out for less than 50 runs in a Test innings. The West Indies broke their own unwanted record, as their previous lowest score of 47 runs was back in 2004.

Heartbreaking to be in this position: Roston Chase

After being whitewashed by Australia at home, Roston Chase said at the post-match presentation, “Heartbreaking to be in this position; we could have won this game. It has been something that has been recurring; it is disappointing. It is easy to assess; the bowlers kept us in the series, and the batting never showed up.

We need to look at ourselves as batters and really have a look at how to improve and put 300-run totals on the board. The next series is a while away now; that’s good. India will be different; we need to find some batting character heading into that series.”
