IPL 2025: Delhi Capitals appoint Axar Patel as captain

In a significant move ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Delhi Capitals (DC) have announced the appointment of Axar Patel as their new captain. The 31-year-old all-rounder, who has been with the franchise since 2019, takes over the leadership role following Rishabh Pant’s departure to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Patel, known for his versatility as a left-handed batter and left-arm spin bowler, has played a crucial role in the Capitals’ lineup over the years. In his 82 matches for DC, he has scored 967 runs and picked up 62 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.09. His appointment marks a new chapter for the franchise, which is seeking its first-ever IPL title.

Axar Patel’s captaincy experience

Patel’s leadership experience includes captaining his state team, Gujarat, in 23 matches across formats, and he has also led the Capitals in one IPL match previously. Additionally, he was named India’s T20I vice-captain earlier this year, further highlighting his growing leadership credentials.

Speaking about his new role, Patel expressed his gratitude and confidence in leading the team. “It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I’m deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me,” he said in an official statement. “I’ve grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward.”

Team dynamics of Delhi Capitals

The Capitals have assembled a balanced squad following the mega auction, which Axar believes has tremendous potential. The team will be supported by a strong leadership group, including experienced players and a new coaching staff comprising Hemang Badani as head coach and Matthew Mott as assistant coach.

The Capitals begin their IPL 2025 campaign against LSG on March 24 at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. With Axar at the helm, the team aims to bounce back from a disappointing previous season and make a strong push for the title.
