Since the last few days, there have been a lot of talks about the Delhi Capitals captain. The competition reportedly was between Axar Patel and KL Rahul for the role. But it was the all-rounder who got the nod ahead after the reports claimed that the batter rejected the offer.

Axar Patel has been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals since 2019 and has grown in leaps and bounds. Since the last few seasons, the left-hander has been the MVP of the team as he has contributed immensely with the bat and ball as well as in the field.

Axar Patel was recently appointed as the vice-captain of the India National Cricket Team in T20Is and this surely would’ve played a major role in him getting Delhi Capitals leadership. He was vice-captain of the franchise last year and also led the team in one game.

This will be the first time in his career that he will be leading a franchise full-time in the IPL. The all-rounder recently led his state team, Gujarat, in 23 matches across formats. With the kind of form he has been in, it’s fair to say that he was the best bet for Delhi Capitals to take over the role.

Axar Patel will be entering the IPL 2025 on the back of solid performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The all-rounder played a vital role for India with the bat and ball and took them to the title win. He picked 5 wickets with an economy rate of 4.35 and made vital contributions batting at No. 5 in the tournament.

On his appointment, Axar Patel said: “It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I’m deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me. I’ve grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward.”
