As India reels from a narrow 22-run defeat in a dramatic third Test at Lord’s, the spotlight has shifted firmly to Rishabh Pant’s availability for the pivotal fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, beginning July 23. India, trailing 2-1 in the five-match series, faces a must-win situation, making Pant’s presence crucial both as a wicketkeeper and as one of the team’s most dependable run-scorers.
Rishabh Pant suffered injury during Lord’s Test
Pant, India’s dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, sustained a painful blow to his left index finger during England’s first innings at Lord’s. While collecting a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah in the 34th over, Pant was immediately in visible discomfort and required medical treatment on the field. Though he managed to finish the over, he could not continue his wicketkeeping duties and was replaced behind the stumps by Dhruv Jurel for the remainder of the match.
Despite the discomfort, Pant’s resolve was on display as he batted at No. 5 in both Indian innings. His 74 off 112 in the first innings underscored his significance, even as spectators noted him frequently taking his injured hand off the bat. The pain was palpable every time the ball struck his bat, especially during India’s tense run-chase on the final day.
Shubman Gill shares update on Pant’s injury
After the match, India captain Shubman Gill delivered a major update that eased fears across the dressing room and among fans. Addressing the media at the post-match press conference, Gill said: “Rishabh went for scans, and there’s no major injury. So he should be fine for the next Test.”
Gill confirmed that, while Pant was clearly in pain and hampered during the match, the scans revealed no serious damage.
“I think Rishabh is fine—he didn’t suffer a major injury, which is good news. I think he should be fine for the next Test match,” Gill assured reporters.
India’s medical team is monitoring Pant, and he is receiving ongoing treatment. With nine days before the Manchester Test, the expectation is for Pant to recover fully and be fit for selection.
