Cameron Green reveals Jasprit Bumrah’s special message before back surgery

Australia’s rising all-rounder Cameron Green has revealed the pivotal role played by Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in his decision to undergo crucial back surgery. Green’s account highlights the deep camaraderie and mutual respect that underpins the competitive world of international cricket, offering a glimpse into the support networks that often go unseen.

A timely message of reassurance for Cameron Green

Green, who has grappled with a series of debilitating back injuries throughout his burgeoning career, faced a daunting crossroads last year after a stress fracture necessitated surgical intervention. On the eve of his operation in October 2024, a moment fraught with anxiety and uncertainty, Green received an unexpected but profoundly comforting message. It came from none other than Jasprit Bumrah, who, a mere 18 months prior, had navigated a similar surgical journey and orchestrated a remarkable comeback for India.

At the time of sending the message, Bumrah was in the thick of a demanding Test series against New Zealand, underscoring the thoughtfulness and genuine concern behind his gesture. “That was really special. It makes you feel a lot better about it,” Green recounted addressing the media ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa. “To have someone like him reach out, and then to watch him during the summer, to see how well he did post-surgery, gave me a lot of confidence.”

Though their paths never directly converged on the field during Green’s tenure with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, the Australian all-rounder noted that their interactions were sufficient to forge a meaningful connection. “I didn’t play with him in Mumbai but that was the connection we had. We spent some time together,” Green elaborated, emphasizing the shared understanding that blossomed between them.

Bumrah’s triumphant return to the cricketing arena after his own back surgery served as a potent source of both inspiration and solace for Green. The Indian fast bowler’s exceptional ability to not only regain his top form but also deliver match-winning performances post-operation was particularly heartening for the young Australian, who harbored natural anxieties about the arduous road to recovery and the potential implications for his international career.

Green’s road to recovery

The aftermath of Green’s surgery saw him sidelined from several significant tournaments, including the home series against India, the Champions Trophy, and the 2025 IPL season. However, Green judiciously utilized his recovery period, redirecting his focus towards refining his batting prowess. This dedicated approach bore fruit in county cricket with Gloucestershire, where he marked his return with an impressive three centuries in just five matches.

Reflecting on his challenging yet transformative journey, Green acknowledged an unexpected silver lining to his recurring injury woes. “The silver lining to having four back injuries is I’ve got four chances only to be a batter,” he mused with a smile, hinting at a potential shift in his cricketing identity. “My batting has always been solid throughout those circumstances, so I’m not giving that up. However, it is nice to just focus on batting.” Green’s words not only convey his resilience but also underscore the profound impact of a timely message from a respected peer, proving that in the world of competitive sport, true camaraderie knows no boundaries.
