There have been speculations about the international futures of veteran Team India batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in One Day Internationals (ODIs). However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has no immediate plans to make any decisions regarding the two star players.
India’s ODI series against Bangladesh in August has been cancelled, delaying Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s return to international cricket. The Men in Blue will play their next ODI series against Australia from October 19 to 25. Rohit and Virat will be around 40 years old by the time of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
BCCI Considering Post-Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Era Ahead of 2027 World Cup
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is after India’s 2024 World Cup victory. The duo also bid farewell to Test cricket before the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 in England.
According to a Dainik Jagran report, the BCCI is looking to move beyond the two stalwarts with the 2027 World Cup in mind. The white-ball series between India and Australia in October might be their final outing in the format.
The report further added that if Kohli and Rohit wish to play until 2027, they would need to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to stay match-ready and eligible for selection — a condition that might prompt them to retire.
BCCI Focused on Asia Cup 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026
A BCCI source privy to the developments told PTI that the board is not concerned about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI futures. The BCCI’s priority is selecting the strongest squad for the Asia Cup, ensuring all players are fit and ready.
“Obviously, if they (Rohit and Kohli) have something in mind, they would tell the BCCI brass like they did before the England Test tour. But from an Indian team’s perspective, the next big assignment is the T20 World Cup in February and preparations before that. The immediate focus will be on sending the best team for the Asia Cup T20 tournament, hoping all players are fit and available,” the source said.

The two players have not played competitive cricket since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Kohli, now living in London, has resumed indoor training. Rohit, who spent his post-IPL break in the UK, is back in Mumbai and is expected to start training soon.
Kohli has played seven ODIs in 2025, amassing 275 runs at an average of 45.83, including one century and two fifties. Rohit has played eight ODIs, scoring 302 runs at 37.75, with one century and one fifty.
