Australian star all-rounder announces retirement from ODI cricket ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025

Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis stunned the cricket world by announcing his immediate retirement from one-day international cricket while confirming he will remain available for T20Is.

Despite being named in Australia’s preliminary 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and the UAE, he will be replaced in the final squad to be announced by February 12. In a candid statement, Stoinis reflected on his ODI journey. His decision, made at such a critical juncture, has sent shockwaves through the cricketing fraternity, highlighting the evolving nature of modern cricket and his personal priorities. By stepping away from the 50-over format immediately, he has signaled a shift in focus towards T20 cricket, where his dynamic skill set remains highly valued.

“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish,” Stoinis was quoted as saying by the ESPNcricinfo.

Reflecting on a storied ODI career for Australia

Stoinis’ retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in his career – a journey defined by memorable performances, resilience, and moments of brilliance on the ODI stage. Over the span of 74 ODIs, which included appearances in two World Cups and a memorable century against New Zealand in 2017, he evolved into a key cog in Australia’s white-ball machine.

His recall for the Champions Trophy following his earlier omission in the 2023 World Cup semi-final underscored his determination, even as he faced stiff competition and evolving team strategies. He expressed gratitude for the support of his teammates and coaching staff, notably highlighting his “fantastic relationship with Ron [Australia men’s team coach Andrew McDonald]” and promising to continue cheering the boys on in Pakistan.

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Australia men’s team coach Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support. I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan,” Stoinis concluded.
