Player ratings as Torres fires Catalans to victory

Ferran Torres was the Barcelona hero on Wednesday night as he scored twice in their 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Much of Dortmund’s success in recent years, especially in this competition, has been predicated on their form at Signal Iduna Park. They’d enjoyed an 11-game winning run at home before their recent draw in Der Klassiker. However, the signs were ominous for Nuri Sahin’s side early on here.

Barcelona started superbly and had their way with the hosts, but Dortmund did a decent job of limiting the amount of work Gregor Kobel had to do. After weathering an early Catalan storm, Sahin’s men settled.

Marcel Sabitzer blazed the best chance of the first-half over after receiving Julien Duranville’s cut-back, while Serhou Guirassy had a couple of sights of Inaki Pena’s goal towards the end of the opening period.

There were goals at both ends before the hour with Raphinha scoring yet again in the Champions League to hand Barcelona the lead. However, the Blaugrana’s advantage was held for just seven minutes as Pau Cubarsi was penalised for a push on Guirassy in the box. BVB’s number nine then duly converted from 12 yards.

it was a similar story when Barca took the lead for a second time through substitute Ferran Torres, with their lead lasting just three minutes this time around. Guirassy capitalised on a defensive breakdown by tapping into an empty net.

That wasn’t the end of the scoring, though, with the visitors ruthlessly turning a Dortmund corner into the match-winning sequence. Yamal’s cute pass in behind for Ferran was perfect, and the substitute’s finish, considerably tougher than his first, was pinpoint.
