Daren Sammy brutally punished by ICC for attacking umpire Adrian Holdstock

West Indies coach Daren Sammy has been fined for his recent criticism of third umpire Adrian Holdstock after the umpire made some doubtful decisions during the opening Test against Australia at Barbados.

Holdstock’s decision never seemed to be going in favour of the West Indies for once, as most of the decisions went in favour of the visitors. Hence, speaking after the second day’s play, Sammy said he had doubts related to Adrian Holdstock’s umpiring.

He also expressed that his decisions have been doubted by the former West Indies captain since the ODIs against England.

“You don’t want to get yourself in a situation where you’re wondering about certain umpires,” Sammy said. “Is there something against this team? But when you see decision after decision, then it raises the question.”

Which code of conduct was Daren Sammy fined for breaking?

Daren Sammy has been fined by the ICC, but which code of conduct has he violated? Sammy was found violating Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which states that, ‘public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match or any player, player support personnel, match official or team participating in any international match’.

Daren Sammy has admitted to this offence and has also accepted the sanction that was provided by match referee Javagal Srinath. Though the minimum penalty of an official reprimand can have a maximum of more than 50% of the match fee, along with handed demerit points.

He was fined 15% of the match fee for the offence committed recently. A demerit point has also been added to Daren Sammy’s disciplinary record, this being his first attempt in two years.

Decisions made by Adrian Holdstock that angered Daren Sammy

Daren Sammy was angered by several decisions made by Adrian Holdstock, who was assigned the third umpire role in the first Test against Australia.

Sammy was first angered by Holdstock’s most controversial decision made on Day 1, when he ruled out a caught-behind chance of Travis Head off the bowling of Shamar Joseph. This not only denied Shamar his 5-fer, Head survived and added valuable runs for Australia.

The next day followed, with two more controversial decisions made. Roston Chase’s LBW decision was upheld by the TV umpire despite a clear suggestion of an inside edge, and Shai Hope’s inside edge was caught stunningly by Alex Carey, which was ruled clean by Holdstock.

Australia begin WTC campaign with a win in Barbados

The Aussies were the winners of the ICC World Test Championship 2023 and were the finalists in 2025 as well, where they lost to South Africa. After a stunning campaign in the last two successive WTCs, they have advanced to the West Indies for a test tour.

In the opening test, the Aussies might not have made a great start; however, the second innings marked an Aussie-like comeback in the Test match. Travis Head won the Player of the Match award for two stunning fifties across both innings of play.

With Travis Head, Beau Webster, and Alex Carey all scoring crucial fifties in the second Australian batting innings, Australia defeated the West Indies after a stunning spell from Josh Hazlewood. With this win, Australia have made a great start to their WTC campaign.
