Navjot Singh Sidhu shares his firm stance on Rohit Sharma leading India in England Tests

As the cricket world continues to debate over Rohit Sharma‘s future as India‘s Test captain, former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has come out strongly in support of the embattled skipper. With India set to face England in a crucial five-match Test series later this year, Sidhu believes that Rohit should continue to lead the team, citing his experience and the lack of a suitable replacement.

Rohit’s leadership in Test cricket has faced intense scrutiny following India’s back-to-back series losses to New Zealand and Australia, which resulted in the team missing out on the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time. Despite his recent struggles with the bat, where he managed just 164 runs in 15 innings at an average of 10.93, Sidhu remains adamant that Rohit should retain his position as captain.

Sidhu’s argument centers around the absence of a viable alternative to Rohit. He questions who could possibly replace Rohit at such short notice, emphasizing that no other player has demonstrated the necessary performance or experience to take over the captaincy. Rohit’s impressive record in England, where he was India’s leading run-scorer during their 2021 tour, is another key factor in Sidhu’s reasoning. Rohit amassed 368 runs across eight innings at an average of 52.57, showcasing his ability to thrive in English conditions.

If there are 10 people in India, they have 20 different opinions. Who can you make the captain of the Test format at the last moment? You don’t have anyone. No one has performed like this. You don’t have a replacement. Rohit has experience. You cannot replace Rohit. His record in England is strong. You will have to take along experience and young players till the 2027 World Cup. You will have to set the team combination right. Rohit will be the captain and he should be the captain. Will you put him on the throne now? He has won 2 World Cups. In such a situation, what litmus test will you take?” Sidhu stated in a conversation with Sports Tak.

Experience and youth: The perfect blend of Team India

Sidhu also highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between experienced players and young talent in the team. He believes that players like Rohit, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are crucial for providing stability and leadership, while younger players such as Nitish Reddy, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav bring the necessary exuberance and innovation.

Till the 2027 World Cup, you will have to make a mix of the experience of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and the exuberance of someone like Nitish Reddy, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav. Until you do not make this mix, you cannot select a good team,” Sidhu added.

The challenge of replacing Rohit

The potential replacement for Rohit, if he were to step down or be replaced, is Jasprit Bumrah, who has already led India in two Tests during the recent series in Australia. However, Bumrah’s recurring injury issues raise concerns about his ability to handle the demands of Test captaincy consistently.

Sidhu’s stance is clear: without a proven alternative, Rohit should continue as captain. His experience and past successes, including leading India to two ICC titles, make him the ideal choice for the upcoming England series. Sidhu’s comments reflect a broader sentiment within Indian cricket that stability and continuity are essential for success, especially in the high-pressure environment of Test cricket.

Rohit has recently clarified that he is not planning to retire from ODI cricket anytime soon, despite earlier speculation that he might step down after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, his future in Test cricket remains uncertain due to his recent form. Sidhu’s backing suggests that Rohit still has a significant role to play in Indian cricket, particularly in the Test format.
