Former Australia Cricketer Ricky Ponting talked about Rohit Sharma’s retirement talks ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He said that with the way the India batter is playing, he must have kept the goal of playing in the ICC World Cup 2027.

Rohit Sharma mentions he is not going to retire

Ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, there were a lot of reports which claimed that Rohit Sharma would be retiring after the tournament. However, the India captain put all the talks to rest after he led the team to win the tournament, having won all the games.

When you start getting to that point of your career, everyone’s waiting for you to retire – RIcky Ponting on Rohit Sharma

While addressing the talks of Rohit’s retirement, Ricky Ponting said that with the way the India captain played in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, he shut all the talks. While talking to ICC about the same, he said:

“When you start getting to that point of your career, everyone’s waiting for you to retire. And I don’t know why, when you can still play as well as he’s played (in the final), I think he was just trying to put those questions to bed once and for all and say, ‘no, I’m still playing well enough.

“I love playing in this team. I love leading this team.’ And I think the fact that he said that, to me, it means that he must have that goal in mind of playing in the next (50-over) World Cup (in 2027).”

When you see him play like he played in the Champions Trophy final, you wouldn’t say that his time is up just yet – Ricky Ponting on Rohit Sharma

Ricky Ponting further pointed out that after losing the ICC World Cup 2023 final, Rohit must have thought about having a few more cracks. He concluded by saying that with the way Rohit Sharma played, it doesn’t look like his time is over. He added:

“I think probably the fact that they lost the last one and he was captain, that might be the thing that’s playing on the back of his mind. Just have one more crack at trying to win the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the ODI World Cup. I mean when you see him play like he played in the Champions Trophy final, you wouldn’t say that his time is up just yet.”
