The highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 22, with all teams ramping up their preparations. However, Delhi Capitals (DC) remain a hot topic among cricket fans as they have yet to announce their captain for the upcoming ten-team tournament.
The Capitals are yet to win their maiden Indian Premier League title. They finished sixth in the table with seven wins and seven losses from 14 matches in the 2024 season. DC failed to qualify for the playoffs despite having the same points as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Delhi Capitals have not made the playoffs since the 2021 season. They came close to winning the IPL title in 2020 when they finished as runners-up after losing to Mumbai Indians in the final.
With a revamped squad from the IPL 2025 mega auction, DC are aiming for a turnaround to finally secure their maiden title. The team will also have a new captain following Rishabh Pant’s departure.
The Capitals were outbid by Lucknow Super Giants, who secured Rishabh Pant for ₹27 crore in the auction. Axar Patel, KL Rahul, and Faf du Plessis emerged as the top contenders for the captaincy role. However, according to IANS, Rahul turned down the offer, leaving Axar Patel as the likely new captain.

The Delhi-based franchise has strengthened its coaching staff ahead of IPL 2025 by appointing Anton Roux and Gnaneswara Rao as fielding coaches. The franchise made the announcement amid ongoing discussions about their new captain for the upcoming season.
Delhi Capitals took to Instagram to announce their new coaches with the caption, “Our coaching staff just got bigger and stronger 💪 Welcome, Anton and Gnaneswara 💙❤️.”

Delhi Capitals have revamped their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2025. They parted ways with Ricky Ponting, who was the head coach, last year. Former India batter Hemang Badani has been appointed as the head coach, while Venugopal Rao has taken over as Director of Cricket, replacing Sourav Ganguly.
The franchise has also added Matthew Mott as an assistant coach, following his stint as England men’s head coach. Munaf Patel, a member of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad, has been appointed as the bowling coach. Kevin Pietersen, the legendary English cricketer, has joined as a mentor.
Delhi Capitals will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Visakhapatnam on Monday, March 24. They will play their second consecutive match at the same venue, facing SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 30.
